Camino de Santiago, Day 67 Camino Francés, the Way to Santiago de Compostela “The Botafumeiro”

The Botafumeiro at the close of the Pilgrim Mass

The Botafumeiro is a giant thurible used in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. This tradition dates back to the 11th century, During the Pilgrim Mass, the Botafumeiro is swung impressively across the cathedral, filling the space with incense. This awe-inspiring ritual not only symbolizes purification and prayer but also adds a spectacular and memorable end to the pilgrims’ spiritual journey.

The incense burned in the Botafumeiro is typically a mixture of aromatic resins, such as frankincense and myrrh, combined with charcoal. This fragrant mixture fills the cathedral with a sweet-smelling smoke, symbolizing the prayers of the faithful rising to heaven and purifying the sacred space.

The Botafumeiro at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the largest thurible in the world. It takes eight men, known as Tiraboleiros, to pull on the ropes and swing it during ceremonies.
