Caminho Português 2026 Starts

I plan to walk the Caminho Português, or the Portuguese Way, starting in Lisboa. But before I actually start there, I’m taking a coastal variant, starting in the town of Ericeira, about 40 miles northwest of Lisboa.

Ericeira is known as the surfing capital of Portugal. It has a long history as a fishing village, and it’s also very popular among the Portuguese as a summer resort town.

I’ll be walking south from Ericeira, then to Azenhas do Mar, spending the night there. From there, I’ll walk past Cabo da Roca, where the lighthouse marking the westernmost point of continental Europe is located.

From Azenhas do Mar, I’ll continue down to Praia de Guincho, another very scenic beach and surf spot. I’ll spend the night there, then head south to the mouth of the Tagus River.

I’ll walk along the north bank of the Tagus toward Lisboa, passing through the towns that comprise the Costa do Estoril, or the Estoril Coast. These include little villages such as Cascais, Estoril, São Pedro, São João do Estoril, Parede, and Oeiras, before arriving in Lisboa.

From there, I’ll spend a couple of days in Lisboa, exploring Lisbon and its surroundings, before heading north to Azambuja and following the published Caminho Português Central route.

From Azambuja to Santarém, Golegã, Tomar, and towns north, I’ll continue until arriving at Porto, where I’ll meet a friend whom I met on the last Camino.

Then we’ll head north from Porto to Santiago de Compostela, taking the coastal route of the Camino Português.

From there, I plan to head west to Finisterre, and then just north of Finisterre, to Muxía. And there, at Muxía, I will bring my Camino for the year 2026 to an end.
